US Tour de France title ranking drops

23 Oct 2012

As a result of Lance Armstrong stripped of his seven Tour de France titles by the cycling's governing body, the U.S. title count dropped back to three, thus knocking the U.S. from 4th place to 6th place in title ranking. This reverts back to Greg LeMond, 51, as the last American titleholder.

The governing body's decision was based on results of the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency alleging that Armstrong organized a massive doping program on his teams. This latest decision yielded the latest country count for Le Tour de France:

1. France - 36
2. Belgium - 18
3. Spain - 12
4. Italy - 9
5. Luxembourg - 5
6. United States - 3
7. Netherlands - 2
8. Switzerland - 2
9. Australia - 1
10. Denmark - 1
11. Germany - 1
12. Ireland - 1
13. United Kingdom - 1

American cyclist fans can now look to the future with hopefuls including Christian Vande Velde, 36, Taylor Phinney, 22, and Tejay Van Garderen, 24.
